Juvederm Ultra / Juvederm Ultra Plus

Juvederm is a second generation hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin.  It is also the first injectable gel with hyaluronic acid approved by the FDA. It is manufactured with technology that has a greater molecular link than its precursor, Restylane.  In addition, it is more long-lasting; it can be injected easily allowing insertion into the tissues without the need of sculpting; once applied, it is hardly felt making it almost imperceptible when you touch your skin.

Juvederm is now available in two formulas that include anesthetic lidocaine: Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC

The first product is an excellent choice to restore volume to the lips and sunken eyes, whereas, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is ideal for filling depressions in the face between the cheeks and the area of the mouth and nose) nasolabial ridge that cause parenthesis lines on the sides of the mouth.  It is also highly recommended for lines that form on sides of mouth due to accumulated fat in the area and to loss of firmness on the lateral ridges of the lips (melolabial groove). This is when the mouth looks like an upside-down U. These are called frown lines in allusion to the lines seen on the mouths of wooden dolls.

This treatment is recommended for young patients, men or women, with any skin type who have mild or severe grooves.

How is Juvederm applied?

With the exception of the lips, Juvederm is applied in the offices at the Instituto de Cirugía Orbitofacial using cold anesthesia in cream form on the area to be treated. Lips require that feeling be blocked with injectable anesthesia because of their sensitivity.

Treatment with Juvederm produces very little discomfort. Once it is applied, the patients must not touch the area unnecessarily. However, there is no problem with applying makeup and the patients can return to their normal activities after application as long as they do not expose themselves to extreme heat or sun during the week following treatment. We recommend avoiding the use of products containing alcohol on the area treated and always using sun protection. The effects last for 12 to 18 months. On the lips, however,  the effects last approximately 6 months.
